Over the years, our minds have been stationed in a particular way pertaining to certain pertinent societal issues. One of this is our perceptions against ADDICTION.
We tend to forget our rationality and misjudge Addicts and alcoholics based on our prejudices and assumptions without an iota of care to know the cause for such individuals to be in their daily walk of addiction.
We tag them as tramps, vagabonds, junkies, liabilities, deviants and irresponsible individuals with no heads. Indeed, some people take drugs or alcohol as a sort of pleasure or fun but are all people the same? It is so unfortunate we tend to hate addicts instead detesting the act itself and help them find a panacea to quitting(addiction). We pick on them, pull their legs, say ills of them oblivious of the fact that we all flawed in different angles and by the help of another that we can gain strength. We failed to realize that our social repercussions will only encourage them to resort to more drinking and drugging.
I will emphatically say that ADDICTION is one of the manifestations of LACK OR LOW SELF-ESTEEM
The plague of ADDICTION goes beyond the physical. It is a mental and psychological malady resulting from No or Low Self-esteem. The are so many individuals out there who think they are worthless, incompetent, inadequate, unloved, inferior and unmotivated and this stems from issues of anger, neglect, constant negative criticisms and what have we. There are people who cannot just accept who they are, their capabilities, potentials and they always sabotage themselves from succeeding.
The feeling of worthless and the thought that the world has nothing to offer wretched individuals is what makes such individuals resort to alcoholism and drugging. They feel that is the only way they could escape their problems. Each and every day they take doses so it can take their minds off all confrontations and since alcoholism and drugging only does that momentarily, they keep taking it hence resulting to ADDICTION.
Addicts and alcoholics in our societies need external motivation since the do not have the self motivation. Let’s turn our critics against them into words of encouragement. Let’s help refer them to professionals for counseling so they too can realize their worth. Nobody is a liability so if we cannot help others realize who they really are, then let’s not condemn them either.
