Aggrieved staff of public universities suspend intended strike after meeting with NLC

At a meeting on Wednesday between the unions and the National Labour Commission (NLC), an attempt to persuade the striking public university workers union to change their mind was unsuccessful.

Prof. Ransford Gyampo, the secretary of the UTAG branch at the University of Ghana, reports that it was made clear at the meeting that the Finance Ministry will play a significant role in resolving their issues.

In light of the ongoing investigation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta following a motion of censure against the official in Parliament, he further stated that the process might be delayed.

After the engagement, Prof. Gyampo spoke with Citi News and said that the meeting had been rescheduled for the next ten days.

“We have brought this proposal to the National Labour Commission, and they have also sort of agreed that we should wait and go on with the discussion in the next 10 days.”

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) are the other unions that are on strike.

Six weeks have passed since the start of the four unions’ strike at public universities.

For instance, UTAG is concerned about the implementation of the GHS10.99 modified ex-pump rate, which will have an impact on vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances.

The union has protested that the employer is not abiding by the agreed-upon Conditions of Service of University Workers.
