Convert National Cathedral project into hospital – TUC to govt
The Trades Union Congress(TUC) has raised a suggestion of turning or converting the National Cathedral project into a national hospital.
In an address of the 2023 May Day parade in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, the Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congeress (TUC), Dr Anthony Yaw Baah stated that converting the national cathedral project into a hospital will serve and meet the needs of Ghanaians better.

The TUC also called on the government to intervene in its revenue mobilization efforts. The TUC again warned against the excessive use of regressive taxes which will become a burden to local businesses.
The Organised Labour also advised the President to reduce the size of the government as the country, Ghana is facing severe economic crisis.
The 2023 May Day parade is based on the theme: “Protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crisis: Our responsibility.”
“The president has always said he wants to create another Notre Dame in Ghana so we can attract a lot of visitors, but we disagree. In fact, comrades, it will be better to convert the project into a national hospital,” Dr Yaw Baah said adding “Mr. President you can also reduce the size of your government. Ghana has too many ministers and deputy ministers.”

However, the Volta and Oti Regional Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Edith Abla Amenuvor Afenu, also shared her opinion, stating that she does not believe the current economic crisis being faced is a result of global challenges such as Covid-19 and the Russian-Ukrainian War.
To her, the government’s misappropriation and mismanagement of the public funds has been brought to light by the global crisis. She added that the IMF bailout which the government is seeking cannot bring a change in our economic predicaments but will rather burdeb the ordinary Ghanaian worker the more.
