The Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education, Amedzofe (formerly Evangelical Presbyterian Training College, Amedzofe) was officially opened on February 10, 1946. The College was an off-shoot of two earlier institutions established by the Bremen Mission in the second half of the nineteenth century at Keta.
The German missionaries first established a school at Keta and later added a Theological Seminary to train Christian who were expected to teach Christian religion and allied subjects in the few schools opened in the Ewe land by the German Missionaries.
As the German missionaries moved inland to open more mission stations and propagate the gospel, they found their delight in a cool and revitalizing climate at Amedzofe and decided to settle there.
The seminary was later moved from Keta to Amedzofe for which it lasted for only two years and was later closed down due to the Second World War from 1939 to 1945.
Upon the closure of the seminary, the E.P Church student who wished to pursue a teaching career had to seek admission to either Akropong or Abetifi because these schools were the only schools available for training teachers and only a few students were able to gain admission into these schools.
In 1927 the intake of E.P Church students increased which appreciated the need for the establishment of a Teacher Training College in 1944.

The idea was supported by the then Director of Education for the Gold Coast supported the idea and encouraged the E.P Church Synod to open a 2year Certificate ‘B’ Teacher Training College at Amedzofe.On February 10, 1946, the E.P Training College Amedzofe came into being with 30 male students, and Rev.W.M. Beveridge, a Scottish Missionary the then supervisor of E.P Schools was appointed as the first principal.
All this while only male students were admitted to the school. The admission of female students created a congenital condition for the development of the college’s choral music.
Between 1962 and September 2004, the college was upgraded from the 4year Certificate ‘A’ programme to a diploma awarding institution with a 3year Diploma in Basic Education Programme introduced under the Ghana Education Service of which the last batch completed in the 2019/2020 academic year. The College was initially affiliated to the University of Cape Coast until 2018 when it was changed to the University of Ghana Legon.
The College has five academic departments: Languages, Social Science and Creative Arts, Education Studies, Mathematics/ICT, and Science/Physical Education. The College has over the last 75 years produced over 20,000 trained teachers who contributed their quota to the development of this dear country.
HOW E.P. COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IS GOING CURRENTLY
The college is currently headed by Dr. Dickson Tsey as the principal of the college.
The college as it stands now has increased in population after the introduction of the First Degree programme to about 1500 students in total who are offering 4year B.Ed course programme under the affiliation of the University of Ghana Legon from 2018.

The college just celebrated its 75th anniversary with the theme ‘Restoring the past glory, repositioning Ameco as a partner in quality Teacher education in the 21st century. For this reason, the college is putting in much effort to achieve the goal of their theme of the celebration. The has won a lot of awards as far as education is concerned.
