Image of Ghana’s judiciary broken; current Chief Justice must be changed – Mahama
Former President; John Dramani Maham has raised criticisms against the Judiciary and Chief. He criticized that the Judiciary is broken and the Chief Justice need new leadership or to be changed.
This change in leadership, he thinks will help renew or repair the broken image of the Judiciary. He believes that the standards of the current Judiciary is dragging in the mud and has come below belt that it has lost the trust, faith and patronization of the ordinary Ghanaian.
“So badly has the image of our Judiciary deteriorated that many of our citizenry openly make mockery of our justice system and of our justices. The phrase ‘Go to Court’ is these days met with derisive laughter, instead of hope that one will truly get justice”.
“There is therefore the urgent need for the Ghanaian Judiciary to work to win the trust and confidence of the citizenry, and erase the widely held perception of hostility and political bias in legal proceedings at the highest courts of the land”, the former President suggested.

These things he said when he was addressing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Lawyers’ Conference last Sunday, 28th August,2022.
In such address, he mentioned that the current Judiciary is incapable of redeeming it’s broken image hence the need for change in leadership, that is change of the Chief Justice.
“Unfortunately, we have no hope that the current leadership of our Judiciary can lead such a process of change. We can only hope, that a new Chief Justice will lead the process to repair the broken image that our Judiciary has acquired over the last few years,” he stated.
In addition, at the said program, the National Chairman of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, also complained of the injustice members of the NDC face in the last few years. He stressed that the target of the unmerited attacks are the strongholds of the party.
In furtherance, he cited a scenario of the recent incident that transpired at Manya and Yilo Krobo to back his claims. Therefore, he called on the legal practitioners or lawyers of the party to war against the unjust treatment meted out to them.

“There have been issues of human rights abuses which are targeted at some of our people in our strongholds. The recent ones are what happened in the Yilo and Manya Krobo areas. Military officers were deployed to the area to unleash violence and brutalities on these innocent people. The narration from the people is most unfortunate, to say the least. These are strongholds of the NDC, and I think we have to send teams to support,” he indicated.
