He went down on his knees begging her. That night was a very solemn night for her.
Wendy is a young lady who grew up from a noble home. She is an attractive lad. She is childish, adult, matured, immature, considerate, inconsiderate, young, old, heroine, foe — usually one when she should be the other, but always positive. She has been described by many as Difficult but that wouldn’t deter her from staying on the right path.
As an eye of her family, Wendy has been one very assiduous and studious. She is used to living a lonely life never to mingle with her mates but an interesting part of her is that she is always free and approachable. Wendy wouldn’t like to mingle with guys for the fact that having a relationship with any guy will be written boldly at the doorstep of her family which will result her in a great trouble. Yes, her family is that protective.
She is a very brilliant student liked by her teachers and the students though some of her mates jealous her. Many students run to her for aid in their academic works and she gladly helps them but she never establish intimacy with them.
She doesn’t stay among her colleagues for longer periods, instead of chatting with friends throughout the day, Wendy prefers to engage her books so she would go to an isolated place where there is little or no disturbance and no one could even trace her for a conversation. Wendy aside her seriousness with studies, never takes her object of worship for a joke because her home trained her to love her object of worship. This has been her life until Jack came into the picture.
Jack is a bit older than Wendy and a great contrast to her. Jack is an average student and he is one who lives a carefree life. He is one who goes out with friends, jokes with them, sometimes unserious with his studies and he is not a believer like Wendy but he posseses a great sense of humour. Out of the blue, Jack became Wendy’s friend.
Wendy didn’t really know how their friendship came about but may be, it might be through one of the days she helped him with his assignment. Though Wendy was not so much involved in their friendship, Jack on the other hand will always make a time to speak to Wendy.
She thought of calling their friendship off because Jack was becoming much of a distraction to her but the fear of she being called a nerd, too religious, too difficult, antisocial and the likes crippled her from implementing that decision. Their relationship continued and it started getting deeper. Her teachers and other well meaning individuals warned her to stay away from Jack but she didn’t heed to them thinking she might cause him pain.
She continued to linger. She continued mingling with him. Then, Jack started showing some signs like he had fallen in love with her. There were times, he would lie on her laps, hug her tight, tickle her palm, try kissing her and many other romantic signs. Wendy somehow also conceived some feelings for Jack but decided to conceive it and watch things unfold.
One fateful day, Jack made his intentions known to her. She wasn’t so surprised because she knew everything would boil down to that. A part of her pushed her to accept immediately but another restricted. She told Jack to give her a space to have a rethink.
A week past and Wendy since then, started avoiding Jack. Jack didn’t give up but kept pursuing her. He kept pleading with Wendy but she gives him no reply. Wendy’s sudden change of attitude took a toll on Jack. He had become a shadow of himself and wouldn’t mingle with anyone. He lost appetite for food and had abandoned his studies and classes. This got many of his friends worried so they decided to talk to Wendy on his behalf.
Wendy felt like giving him a chance but they are a great contrast to each other. On the believe that you can change someone to suit you, she then gave Jack some scriptures to go study and get back to her and tell her what he read in those scriptures. Jack was filled with hope and quickly left to go get a Bible to study. About three days later, at night, he got back to Wendy. He was very delighted because he has done the assignment given him and was hopeful Wendy would accept him.
Wendy felt happy too but alas she didn’t accept him. She still turned him down. Jack’s effort was just like a much ado about nothing. Wendy then told Jack that she wished she could give him a chance but the circumstances beyond her control would not allow her. Her family will devour her, Jack not being serious towards studies and above all, he not being a believer are some of the reasons preventing her from accepting him. Jack couldn’t afford to lose her. He went down on his knees amidst tears begging her to consider giving him a chance. He promised to be anything she wants. He was willing to give up anything for her. That was a very solemn night for her. The incident caused a stare and invited the attention of other students. Jack’s friends knelt down to plead too while the others make a fun of them. Wendy couldn’t stand what was happening, that the only thing she could do was to run away, out of the scene.
On getting to her hostel, other girls scolded her and even the entire students mocked her. Some were very concerned about the fact that she gave Jack scriptures and a light of hope but eventually took it off from him. They called her all sort of names. They threw bitter words at her. There was nothing she could do to redeem herself.
Though her teachers applauded her, she couldn’t just bear the wrath of her mates. Fortunately for her, she was in her final year when all these were happening so she mustered courage to endure the flaming tongues of her mates till she completes. Somehow, the fire of insults and humiliations died down but she never tried to establish contact with Jack, though they’ve forgiven themselves. Their friendship couldn’t hold anymore but they were not enemies too. They both completed school successfully and lost contact of each other.
After many years, Wendy became a successful business woman, a Keynote Speaker and a Motivational Speaker. One day, she was invited for a Home coming Ceremony in her old school to be a Guest Speaker and there, she met Jack again.
Jack out of excitement run to her and hugged her tightly. They both were surprised to see each other again. Their friends who were around chitchat and laughed at them calling them love birds. Jack told her how he longed to see her but she was out of sight. He told her how he has changed and became serious with life and that he believes in God now. All thanks to her. He told her he went back to reflect on the scriptures she gave him and did self introspection and that changed his life.
“Wendy, I’ve realized that after all, you weren’t really difficult as we thought you to be. We just didn’t look at things from your angle. Honestly, I’m glad you didn’t accept to date me on that fateful day. It wouldn’t have landed us anywhere. It was all lust. I wanted to date you because all my friends were doing that and everytime, they would talk about sex and make me the object of their laughter. I wasn’t really bad, just that I fell under their pressure and it consumed me. I’m sorry for what I put you through.” Jack spoke solemnly to Wendy.
Wendy felt emotional. She told Jack, “It’s alright. It’s all good we are all the best of ourselves now. It’s an experience to learn from.” She replied, very smiley. Jack then told her that he is married with a kid and Wendy also exposed that she is in her first year of marriage. They all laughed over everything, including their friends, they made merry and thereafter, they became the best of friends.
