New electricity and water tariffs begin today
Ghanaians will begin paying higher water and electricity rates as of today, Wednesday, February 1, 2023, as the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced an increase.
On January 16, the PURC hiked the price of electricity by 30% and water by 8.3%, both of which took effect on February 1, 2023.

The PURC cited the depreciation of the cedi, increasing inflation, and issues with power generation in support of its decision to accept the hike.
The power distributor claimed in a press statement from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that it has included the unit use and the anticipated cost in a “Reckoner” that makes it obvious how the tariff is applied and billed.
The ECG stated that the percentage increase in the tariff for each customer will vary depending on the customer categorization and usage category.
Furthermore, the Reckoner will be on display at all of ECG’s customer service locations and districts across the country to assist customers with their electricity purchases.

ECG reassured its customers and other stakeholders of its dedication to ensuring the smooth implementation of the new price.
The ECG announced that it has set up customer care centers and assistance desks in every district to assist, clarify, and resolve any issues.
