NHIS COVERING FOUR CHILDHOOD CANCERS; CHECK DETAILS
As promised earlier by the Chairman of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the scheme has begun covering some childhood cancers.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiah ; the Vice President of Ghana took to his social media space and stated in a post that the expanded coverage of the NHIS vegan effectively on 1st July.
In the post on Facebook, he wrote: “plans are far advanced to add treatment for other forms of cancer to the list of ailments covered by NHIS.”

“These health decisions are important to deal with the sickness, and also the financial burden on families of children with cancer and people living with sickle cell will be drastically reduced while receiving treatment.”
The NHIS stated that the four childhood cancers which comprises Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Burkitt Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma and Wilms Tumor will be covered under the expansion.
It is noted that the aforementioned four cancers constitute 60% of all childhood cancers and are highly curable at an early detection.
Coupled with these, the NHIS will cover the cost of Hydroxyurea, an essential drug for the treatment of sickle cell anaemia.
