OKYEAME KWAME ADDRESSES FEMINISM IN ‘WOMAN’

Popular Ghanaian rapper addresses feminism in his song titled ‘Woman’.


For the past 25 years, popular Ghanaian rapper, Okyeame Kwame has been recording more often in the music field. On Friday, August 19, the popular artiste released a brand new song titles “Woman”.

The song “Woman” produced by Abochi is a song that seek to highlight the plight of women in the society and criticisms they endure by doing what pleases them and make them happy.

The aforementioned song features a popular singer, Sista Afia. The song states the obvious that gender is merely social construction and that women just like the men can take important roles in decision making and other creative activities.

Okyeame Kwame also known as Rap Dacta made it known on Graphic Showbiz that he was inspired to write the said song on women and for women as a due to historical marginalisation and denigration of women.

Based on how I was raised to see women, I decided to write a song to add my voice to feminism and to discuss the simple things women have to go through and endure. I want to change the narrative where a woman is valued more when she is married”, he stated.

He added that his song was an inspiration from Amakye Dede’s song, “To Be A Man”.

“I realised Amakye Dede did his song to discuss the problems associated with being a man so I decided to do a female version of it”, Okyeame Kwame added.

The “Woso” hitmaker further highlited that it’s high time women are appreciated because factually, they are performing marvelously well in all facets of life so his song was produced in that regard.

On his intention about changing the narrative about women, he indicated that the song’s lyrics are sufficient to cause controversy and that it also includes thematic elements that women and society can relate to.
“The song aims at starting a conversation on women and what society has ascribed to them,’’ he said.

The multiple-award winning rapper and hitmaker; Okyeame Kwame is known for songs including “Woso”, “Faithful”, “Woara”, “Small” “Small”, “Bra, Eno Be My Matter”, “Yeeko”, “Bolgatanga”, “Sika” among others.
