Teacher Unions call of strike

The three teacher unions that had been on strike for the previous seven days in opposition to Dr. Eric Nkansah’s appointment as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service have ended their strike.

This happens shortly after the National Labour Commission (NLC) successfully obtained a court order preventing the teacher unions from advancing with their strike.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers’ President, Angel Kabonu, gave instructions to all teachers to return to the classroom starting on Monday, November 14, 2022, until further notice while speaking to the media on behalf of the unions.

“We are law-abiding citizens, so we have decided to obey the orders of the Court, and we have asked all our members to call off the strike and to go back to the classroom,” he said.

According to Mr. Kabonu, they would continue to communicate with “the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and report to the Labour Commission on Wednesday, November 16, on the concerns that first sparked the strike in order to find solutions to their demand.”

On Friday, November 4, 2022, the three teacher unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers—announced a national strike in protest of Dr. Eric Nkansah’s appointment as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The organization also protested Lawyer Anthony Boateng’s third contract extension as Deputy Director-General, calling it “unacceptable.”
