Mahama wins flagbearership race with 98.9%
Former president John Dramani Mahama will lead the opposition National Democratic Congress into the 2024 general elections following his resounding victory in the party’s just-ended primaries.
The former president of Ghana, John Mahama, lost his bids for re-election in the general elections of 2016 and 2020.

Mr. Mahama won 297,603 (98.9%) of the total valid votes during the NDC primaries on Saturday, May 13, 2023, becoming the party’s flagbearer-elect.
3,181 (1.1%) votes were cast for his rival Kojo Bonsu.
The returning officer for the Electoral Commission announced the results in the early hours of Sunday, May 14.
He competed against Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former governor of the Bank of Ghana, and Kojo Bonsu, a former mayor of Kumasi.
Dr. Duffuor withdrew from the contest, however, stating that issues he presented regarding inconsistencies on the party’s electoral roll had not been addressed.
In Accra, the party’s headquarters, the great news was announced.
Prior to the primaries, Mahama’s campaign team had stated that they were certain to win 99.9% of the votes.
Beatrice Annan, the team’s deputy spokeswoman, claimed that the enthusiastic reception the team received in each of the 275 constituencies they visited prior to the primaries has deepened and solidified their conviction of an overwhelming victory in the flagbearership election.
Earlier, Kojo Bonsu congratulated John Dramani Mahama on his overwhelming victory in the primaries.
The former mayor of Kumasi revealed in a Facebook post that he had called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on his victory.
